With a mind as steadfast as an old Zen master, the artist blends ink and light with the dust. The veteran does not seek novelty, but lets the brush flow freely. Everyone's mind is hasty, the mountains are not exquisite, and the waters are not cold. The brush remains thin and the bones remain sharp, without being foolish like a tiger's head or behaving wildly like a courtier waiting for an imperial edict. The body resembles a wandering monk begging with a bowl, dwelling in a corner with a midnight lamp. Without following the path of wandering and hiding, one finds peace and clarity. The traces of tigers and dragons are replaced by the altar of Buddhism. Coming and going, the wind passes by the ear, the trees sway and leaves move, with one sound and then another.

Description

The Hehe Erxian, twin immortals of harmony and union, sit barefoot beneath a soaring pine, one holding a lotus, the other a box, with pale halos and autumn-colored foliage behind them. Wu’s long inscription treats painting as a Zen practice: thin bone, no novelty-seeking, coming and going like wind in the trees. The inventory folder called the work “Two Mountains of Harmony”; the iconography is the pair of immortals.
