Once Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, a vivid fluttering butterfly. He felt utterly free and content, and did not know he was Zhou. Suddenly he woke and was unmistakably Zhou. He could not tell whether Zhou had dreamed he was a butterfly, or a butterfly was dreaming it was Zhou. Between Zhou and the butterfly there must be a distinction. This is called the transformation of things.
