Let me follow the old immortal to summon the horned dragon; then straddle it, roaring wild, now west, now east. The merchant boat has not set out, yet rivers and lakes already seem far; the Three Isles and Five Peaks are all one wine cup. Master Wu’s family style is a lofty mountain tune; the flowing water before his gate serves as the morning bell. I do not sigh that I am a guest of the red dust; I do not envy the four-horse carriage returning to princes and dukes. I say my mother is worthy, my father wise and open-hearted; their clumsy son would fashion a splendid countenance for the world. I walk alone, ashamed of the petty and mean; sword in hand, I sing aloud. To join the Great Way and walk it—the road is hard; hard to fathom, hard to chant through. Spring blossoms and autumn moon at the Southern Heaven Palace; summer’s blaze and winter’s storing beneath the Dragon Palace. At night I hear jade flutes and drums in the Western Clear; at dawn I watch phoenixes riding the wind at Kunlun. A Penglai guest with disheveled hair and torn robe—one day, when I return, I should go unhurried and calm. Old lines inscribed on a painting. Yisi, lodging in ancient Mizhou; Nancun, in his fifty-seventh year.
