The monstrous and wicked thrive through a chaotic age; sheep-natured things flaunt brilliant stripes. Their stinging venom has long been in place; chirping and squeaking, they recklessly press farther on. The noble man does not herd with the crowd; he hides his traces, set apart by rivers and seas. Wild roaring suits his free nature—how dare the petty crowd shun him or lightly alter course? Wind and clouds answer in accord; in blazing majesty, a hundred grasses bow low. Crossing the river, one knows the humane man; hungry bellies may gather as they will. He cuts his own flesh to fulfill great righteousness; in saving the world, how could he speak of weariness? His heart dwells deep in rain and dew; awesome and stern, he steadies the realm. Lines inscribed on a tiger. Nan Cun.
