Description
Two figures stand side by side before a cluster of bamboo, their outward calm belying the inscription's sharp observation: "Among the bamboo, one smells humility; within the heart, one hears the sound of swords and halberds." This New Literati painting uses the contrast between serene appearance and hidden complexity to probe the duality of human nature, a wry caution that external courtesy may mask inner sharpness. The upright bamboo, traditionally a symbol of virtue, becomes here an ironic counterpoint to human duplicity.
